Firenze Lai’s painting brings together idiomatic figurative representation and abstract possibility. Space and context are two fundamental concerns in these “situation portraits”, and she is interested in how individuals adjust their mind and body to adapt to the circumstances in which they find themselves. Lai’s intuition is that our experience of life matters in ineffable ways that no “objective” perception of the world can properly capture and her drawings and paintings directly connect viewers to specific emotional states and environmental circumstances. Firenze Lai graduated from the Hong Kong Art School. Her recent exhibitions include: Viva Arte Viva, the 57th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Bienniale (2017); Surround Audience, New Museum Triennial, New York (2015); Turbulence, Mirrored Gardens, Guangzhou (2015). Lai lives and works in Hong Kong.
