JULIÃO SARMENTO

Julião Sarmento is an interdisciplinary artist and throughout his career he has worked in a wide range of media: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, film, video, performance, sound and installation. From 1967-1974 he studied painting and architecture at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes (School of Fine Arts). Sarmento has exhibited extensively worldwide since 1972. Sarmento represented Portugal at the 46th Venice Biennale (1997). His work has been included in two editions of Documenta, Kassel, and in three editions of the Venice Biennale. His work is represented in public and private collections worldwide such as: the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Musée National d'Art Moderne Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Tate Modern, London; the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid. In 2012, Sarmento was the subject of an extensive retrospective exhibition, entitled White Nights, at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto, Portugal. Julião Sarmento lives and works in Portugal.
